Hi-Score
began in 2002 as a weekly meeting between myself and then-student
Ryan Sobol to learn about game development. In 2003, we decided
to open the club to the rest of the Five College community to
"support members pursuing a career in the game development
industry."
We spent the rest of the year planning our growth
strategy with the help of Member #3, Nick Rycar. At the start
of the Spring 2004 semester, we had our first open club meeting,
attracting ninety students.
In 2005, Ryan and I and other graduating officers
passed on the authority hat (and responsibility buck) to the
next generation of club leaders. Today, Hi-Score provides a
supportive atmosphere where people of all skill levels can develop
games together and gain insight into the industry. It educates
members through workshops, member-organized projects, college
courses, and industry speakers. Hi-Score brings people together
who may have not otherwise met, allowing them to form project
groups and giving them valuable future game industry contacts.
It fosters a sense that the game industry has lucrative and
accessible career paths, and helps prepare members for these
careers. Hi-Score also organizes social events, such as game
parties, to help people network and because life should be fun.
